Extract from Jami-al-ulam (1897)

….though Washington bought about the independence of the United Sates from the British yoke, yet Lord Byron and other Britishers praised him for his patriotism and other virtues all the same. “Our” Washington, Mr. Dadabhai Naoroji, has been trying to ameliorate the condition of the Indians. Not by making war on government, but by securing concessions from it, and thereby make the connection between England and India permanent. Then why do not Englishmen praise him also for his patriotic endeavors instead of frowning at him?
